Dashu Township
Description:
Dashu (earliest name Dashu pu 堡 indicating a military garrison) has a long and separate history: in the Han Dynasty it was part of the Yue commandery; in the Tang it entered Liang Zhou; from the Song through the Ming it was controlled by the Qiongbu tusi 邛部土司, a tribal chieftain of the Yi people. In the Qing the government recognized the control of the Tianba tusi 田坝土司 and Kelinping tusi 科林坪土司. In the Kangxi reign post stations were established. In the Republican period Dashu became part of Yuexi County, and it was not included in Hanyuan county until 1951.
Dashu Township will be directly affected by the construction of the Pubugou Hydropower Dam, and Dashu villagers were the most active in the protests of November 2004. Local people emphasized that they made a good living from agriculture, that the fields were reclaimed and irrigated over decades through their hard work and sacrifice, that the area to be inundated had deep historical and cultural significance, and that their views were not respected by the government.

Hanyuan County
Description:
Hanyuan County lies in the southern part of Ya'an Municipality, centered around the Dadu River valley. For most of its history, Hanyuan was known as "Qingxi". It is one of the oldest and most historically significant counties in the region, with settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, and Hanyuan lies at the crossroad of two important trade routes dating back to the early imperial period: the southwest silk road running north-south through the county, and the Tea trade route with Tibet running east-west. Hanyuan holds the convergence of three ethnic groups around the central Dadu valley-- Han, Tibetan, and Yi peoples-- and therefore it was a place of military engagements dating back to the pacification campaigns of Zhuge Liang in the fourth century, and the center of attention in Yazhou for the Qing state.
